Neuronal nuclei, also known as NeuN, Fox-3 or RBFOX3, is a neuron-specific protein expressed in most central and peripheral nervous systems’ neuronal cell types; however, it is not detected in Purkinje cells, sympathetic ganglion cells, Cajal-Retzius cells, INL retinal cells, inferior olivary, or dentate nucleus neurons. NeuN has been utilized as a reliable marker of post-mitotic neurons in studies of neuronal differentiation and in the assessment of neuronal status both in norm and pathology.
